As the volume of stories in the new Star Wars canon continues to grow, I remain hopeful that some of the characters from The Old Republic will weave their way into this new fabric and become canon. It hasn’t happened yet, but it’s come close.
While at Star Wars Celebration Orlando, I attended the Del Rey panel that was held on Saturday, April 15th. It featured several authors including Timothy Zahn, Delilah Dawson, Christie Golden and Chuck Wendig. The panel was asked if there was anything that they wrote that they liked, but was turned down by Lucasfilm.
Chuck Wendig revealed information on an interlude that he wrote that was left on the cutting room floor. For those that don’t know in his Aftermath trilogy, Chuck includes these little vignettes that are not tied to the main story, but involve interesting characters and places from a galaxy, far, far away.
One such interlude involved a traveling droid salesman visiting Bespin post-Imperial occupation. This huckster of a salesman was trying to push off a bunch of old droids under the guise that they were new and state-of-the-art. Unbeknownst to him, one of the droids in his possession was none other than HK-47.
Chuck said he like the idea of everyone’s favorite murderous droid being unleashed on the unsuspecting citizens of cloud city. I have to say, I like that idea too. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
Chuck is a big fan of HK-47 so perhaps he’ll get a chance to write about him in the future. He did manage to sneak in a tiny homage to the homicidal droid in Aftermath: Empire’s End.
So there you have it, HK-47 was so close to being canonized, but for now, he remains a legend.
