Rumors began circulating this week that BioWare is actively working on a new Knights of the Old Republic video game. I need to stress that these are just rumors; 100% unsubstantiated rumors that appear to be held together with bubble gum and duct tape.
An article on Star Wars Game Outpost reported on comments made by gaming journalist/researcher Liam Robertson (@Doctor_Cupcakes) on his patreon page, where he reportedly said this.
I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future.
What they’re currently working on right now—and I have this on good authority—is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic. I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now. I don’t really know how that game’ll end up.
I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.
I think this is sort of like wiping the slate clean… I think this is going to embrace the new Star Wars universe lore because Knights of the Old Republic was sort of just pushed into the expanded universe, the Legends canon of Star Wars.
As you can imagine the rumors have gained quite a bit of traction and Robertson has now clarified on what’s been reported. Here is what he tweeted today.
For the record, I don’t even think BioWare Austin is doing KoToR. All I was really saying was that they prototyped KoToR something.

They prototyped some kind of new KoToR thing a while ago, but idk if that’s still around. https://t.co/hnDce7d68Y

Not what I said. I said they prototyped it. Prototype happened =/= “in development” https://t.co/jUTvjoKYwl

Drew Karpyshn, who wrote the original Knights of the Old Republic, also weighed in on this today with the following tweet.
Sigh. An unsubstantiated rumor and a vague tweet folks want to misinterpret are not confirmation. Just sayin’

I talked about this on Episode 32 of my podcast. I’m all for a new Knights of the Old Republic game, but the idea that BioWare would reboot the original KOTOR to bring its story in-line with the current Star Wars canon, while simultaneously writing stories for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is not canon, makes absolutely no sense to me.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a story-driven game that is an extension of the characters and events of Knights of the Old Republic. In terms of story, it is KOTOR III.
Rebooting Knights of the Old Republic would immediately invalidate everything in Star Wars: The Old Republic. I can’t imagine BioWare would do that unless they planned to pull the plug on SWTOR, which I don’t see happening either.
So is there another Knights of the Old Republic game in the works? I have no idea, and I certainly wouldn’t lay all my cards on Sabacc table betting that there was.
What does seem clear, is there are a lot of people who have a passion for this corner of a galaxy far, far away, and they would not be disappointed at the prospect of a new KOTOR game.
